Mexico made mistakes early on Monday and couldn't recover.
In the first meeting with the Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs in 14 years, Mexico lost 13-2 to Class 2 No. 3 Harrisburg (25-3) after committing five errors and allowing 12 hits. Harrisburg scored six runs in the first inning and had an 11-2 lead over Mexico (18-8) after four innings.
Former Mexico head coach Kendra Murphy is leading Harrisburg to its second straight 20+ win season and was able to count on all-state pitcher Camryn Gray pitching seven innings with nine strikeouts, seven hits and three walks. Aleigha Henderson led Mexico by going 2-for-3 with with one RBI, Payton Sells was 2-for-3, Claire Valenzuela had one RBI, and Keerstan Ewing pitched three innings with four hits, two earned runs and two strikeouts. Jillian Stidham led Harrisburg's offense by going 2-for-5 with three RBIs, Gray hit a home run, and Lily Overfelt and Brette Ackman each went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Mexico plays at Hannibal (6-14) at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
